45 states adopted the Common Core State Standards. Illinois adopted the Common Core State Standards for math and ELA in June 2010 to be fully implemented across the state.  The standards determine what educators should teach, not how it should be taught. The Common Core's higher standards and emphasis on applying knowledge to real world situations will better prepare Illinois students for the challenges facing them after high school graduation.

Benefits:
1. Creates consistent academic expectations for each grade level across the states
2. High school graduates are better prepared for college and/or career success
3. Allows student achievement results to be compared across the states
4. Requires classroom instruction and assessment to reflect 21st century reality
